Long Term Player Development Model

SV Eagles YSA's Long Term Player Development Model is designed to accelerate each player's development as they progress through our soccer program. This model is based on the physical, mental, and emotional maturity and needs for each age group.

Soccer consists of the following 4 elements:

Physical  Technical  Tactical  Psychosocial
Coordination  Dribbling  Principles of Attack  Competitiveness (effort & resiliency)
Speed & Speed Endurance  Receiving  Principles of Defending  Discipline (emotional and mental control)
Acceleration / Deceleration  Short passing (Accuracy - Timing )  Decision Making  Respect (Communication)
PsychoMotor Skills  Long passing (Accuracy -Timing)  Systems of play  Commitment (direct correlation between ignition, commitment, and effort)
Strength  Shooting Combination plays and Team Possesions  *Concentration skill
 Endurance  Heading
Agility  Tackling
Fitness & Specific Conditioning  1v1 defending

These elements are developed through The Long Term Developmental Model:

Age Groups U6 - U10

Program Focus Learning to Train
Training Objective Technical Development and basic tactical understanding (decision making with and without the ball)

Trainings Per Week  1-3
Elemental Focus

Physical:
Basic movement patterns and coordination; developing overall athletic ability. Psychomotor Skills.

Technical:
Fundamental skill development;
small sided game skills

Tactical:
Basic tactical concepts; Decision making in small sided game scenarios

Psychosocial:
Respect - getting along with teammates, communicating with coaches, referees, etc.

Discipline - Players begin learning that details, no matter how small, are important

Competitiveness - Understanding role of adversity in athletics and that effort to overcome the adversity is what is valued.

Playing Time Estimates Minimum of 50% of playing time for all players in each game throughout the season. In young age the players would rather play in a losing effort than sit on the bench during a victory.

Player Evaluations 2 per year - Fall & Spring

Age Groups U11 - U14

Program Focus Training to Train
Training Objective The main areas of focus: continuation of mastering the ball and learning principles of play. Players transition into a Training to Train Phase now that a foundation has been set from previous years of playing. New tactical concepts: Principle of Attacking & Principles of Defending. Several of these principles are very complicated and at this stage of development the focus is creating a foundation based on these principles.

Trainings Per Week  2-4
Elemental Focus

Physical:
Little more intensive movement patterns and coordination; developing overall athletic ability. Psychomotor Skills.

Technical:
Fundamental skill development;
small sided game skills

Tactical:
-Principles of Attacking: Penetration, providing support, movement off the ball, width & depth, and improvisation/creativity.
-Principles of Defending: pressure & cover, delaying, balance/team shape, compactness, control & restraint (not diving in)

Psychosocial:
Respect - getting along with teammates, communicating with coaches, referees, opponents etc.

Discipline - Players expected to apply the ROOTS of respecting: Rules, Opponents, Officials, Teammates, and Self

Competitiveness - Understanding role of adversity in athletics and that effort to overcome the adversity is what is valued.

Playing Time Estimates All players will participate in the game, no one will seat in the bench the whole game.

Player Evaluations 2 per year - Fall & Spring

- Age group: U15-U16

Program Focus: Training To Compete

The main areas of focus: developing tactical concepts of the game while continuing to develop technical abilities. Training sessions will be similar from the previous stage with the areas of focus becoming more complex. Continue to consolidate the performance of fundamental and advanced individual skills. Players should receive more in depth tactical instructions, particularly in understanding playing positions. Players should continue to experience different positions on the field. Optimum time for the introduction of Strength training for girls Players should play other sports, but soccer should become the primary sport during the soccer season for the serious and committed players.

- training per week: 3-5
- Ability to improvise within game situations
- Independent decision-making
- Further development and refinement of soccer specific skills
- Automatic and consistent performance of soccer specific skills
- Development of effective competition strategies and ability to adjust within games
- Successful tactics, strategies, and necessary variations needed to win games
- The importance of variation / options on set-pieces in attack & defense
- Maintenance of physical capabilities with the view of maximizing performance
- Well-developed, refined and individualized mental skills and routines

- Age group: U17 and older

Program Focus: Training to Win

The final phase of player preparation aims to maximize player performance in all aspects of the game. A player's capacities are becoming fully established while training to peak for major competitions. Training is characterized by high intensity and relatively high volume with frequent periods of rest. Team tactics should form a significant part of practice sessions and teams should be coached in team ‘units’ – defense, midfield and attack.

Position training is important, and players should be prepared for a primary position. Physical conditioning is also important for all players and training should be tailored to the physical demands of their position on the field. Optimum time for the introduction of Strength training. Participation in other sports can enhance physical preparation and transferability to soccer. However, soccer should be the primary sport for serious and committed players
- Trainings per week: 3-5

SV Eagles's Style of Play

With the stages of our program focus, this way develops players in all four of these areas (Physical, Technical, Tactical, and Psychosocial) , creating a complete player.
SV Eagles's style of play will attempt to create this image. To do so we must teach the game in a way that reflects the following objectives in each phase of play:

Phase of the Game: Defending

Objective: win the ball back and prevent scoring chances
Methods/Principles used:

  1. Pressure
  2. Cover
  3. Balance
  4. Recovery
  5. Compactness

Phase of the Game: Attack

Objective : Create chances and score goals using several methods so we are difficult to defend.

Methods/Principles used:

  1. Possession and penetration through the center
  2. Possession and penetration trough the width (on flanks)
  3. Shooting from distance
  4. Set pieces
  5. Counter attacking

Phase of the Game: Transition to Defend

Objective: Create opportunities to win the ball back while organizing defensive shape behind the ball.

Methods/Principles used:

  1. Nearest player(s) applies immediate pressure
  2. Players behind the ball and away from it recover to compact, and organized defensive shape

Phase of the Game: Transition to Attack

Objective: Create a goal scoring chance quickly and before the opponent can reorganize defensively.
Methods/Principles used:

  1. Look to play forward 1st
  2. Join the attack at speed
  3. Look to maintain possession away from pressure if forward pass is not available

Follow the Practice Plans

We provide to our coaches the U6-U8 Practice Plans, U9-U12 Practice Plans, U13-U15 Practice Plans, and U16-U18 Practice Plans. The practice plans describe clearly what the coach will implement in his/her coaching sessions in weekly basis during the seasons. We have all coaching material (Docs, videos,series..etc) available to all coaches.

We are expecting all of our coaches come prepared to the practice sessions with a detailed plan.

Our Practice Plans:

- U6-U8 Practice Plan - Phases

Objective: To provide fun, active, age appropriate activities that foster comfort with the ball for each player. It is important, if possible, that all players have a ball in most activities so that they can have “LOTS” of touches as they attempt to dribble (propel) the ball. (Sessions, including the 3v3 or 4v4 game, should be about 75-90 minutes in duration.)

1- Open talk from coach (encouragement words and psychology preparation for the practice) (2 Min)

2- Light training activities as warm up activity with/without the ball (5 Min)

8- ETHICS: Cool down, have the players in a circle then a closing talk with players before they leave, Summarize the practice, ask them to practice what they learn if they are able to do so –Enforce a good ethical behavior. Ask players to do school homework first before coming to next training session. (2 Min)

CONCUSSION AWARENESS:

concussion trainingTo help ensure the health and safety of young athletes, CDC developed the Heads Up: Concussion in Youth Sports initiative to offer information about concussions to coaches, parents, and athletes involved in youth sports. The Heads Up initiative provides important information on preventing, recognizing, and responding to a concussion. Silicon Valley Eagles Youth Soccer requires that all coaches, team contacts and referees are aware of the CDC protocols by taking and completing following certificate.
